Have you ever wondered why some essays you submitted during competitions are not considered for their next stage?

Have you also been wondering why you fail or score low in essay examinations?

This is because writing is not only a process but a systematic way of expressing ideas. It entails stages you need to pass through.

These stages are formed into an acronym called POWER.

POWER is an acronym that represents the five distinct 5 stages of writing which are embedded in pre-writing, writing, and post-post-writing. See:

👉P stands for PLANNING

👉O stands for ORGANIZING

👉W stands for WRITING

👉E stands for EDITING

👉R stands for REVISING

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO AT THE PRE-WRITING STAGE

Planning and organizing are contained in the pre-writing stage. This implies that before you start writing you must adequately plan. How should I plan?

Brainstorm the topic and frame it to captivate your readers; Ask yourself some relevant questions about the topic. This stage requires you to have an adequate understanding of the topic given.

This will take you to organize the ideas birthed during your brainstorming stage. You should also arrange these pieces of information in a logical and readable manner.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AT THE WRITING STAGE?

The writing stage entails putting your pen on paper. You have planned, researched, collected data and organized these data. All your facts and figures are meant to be used during this WRITING stage.

However, remember you need to give your essay a fascinating introduction, a purposive body, and a summarizing conclusion.

Everything you write at this stage is called a DRAFT until you pass through the post-writing stages.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AT THE POST-WRITING STAGE?

Don’t be eager to get your work submitted without taking your time during the final stages of the POST-WRITING STAGE. This stage involves EDITING and REVISING your essay.

It is during this stage you double-check your mechanical accuracy which includes punctuation mistakes, spelling errors, grammar, diction, and so on.

You should also take the pain to proofread your work. You can give it to an expert or someone with a sound language background to help you.

WAIT!!!

BEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR FINAL DRAFT, CONFIRM THESE CHECKLISTS.

1. Objectives of the essay: Are they met?

2. Number of words: Not below the requirements?

3. Font size and spacing

4. Page number

5. Is a reference page required?

After you’ve confirmed all of these, you can now proceed to submit your essay.

THANKS FOR READING!

Good luck!
