Summer is a season in the Western world approximately from June to August if I'm not mistaken.
In education parlance, it falls during a 2-3 months long holiday where learners transit to a new class.
Meanwhile, for most of these learners instead of doing nothing beneficial during this period, parents get them private tutors or enrol them in a class so that they can catch up on missed lessons and prepare them for the next class.
Organizing virtual classes is the best way to earn extra income during this time as an English language teacher. Most learners are lagging and the summer holiday is a golden opportunity for them to catch up on missed lessons.
In low-tech countries, most schools and teachers are used to organizing physical holiday coaching for students promoting to a new class. As a result, a large percentage of these learners find it difficult because some of them have travelled for the holidays.
To fill this gap, you may need to organize virtual classes. In this post, I will reveal to you, some documents, online apps and tools you need to get started.
LET'S BEGIN WITH THE CLASS DOCUMENTS YOU SHOULD PREPARE.
👉SCHEME OF WORK
The first thing you need to get for your new students who are moving to the next class is the new class scheme of work. This is a standard outline of what they will be doing in the next class.
You need it!
You should help them link what they have learnt in the previous class to what they'll be learning in the next class. Every class has its scheme of work.
👉LESSON PLANS
The next documents you need are lesson plans. This is what defines you as an exemplary teacher. Planning your class will save a lot of time during the delivery of your lesson contents; enables effective use of time and make you feel confident and organized.

👉TEXTBOOKS
The use of textbooks will make your lesson directional and effective for the particular class you intend to take.
Textbooks are inevitable resources in teaching. You can go online or ask your learners which textbooks are recommended by their school. You can also sign up for my daily resources and ELT materials.
ONLINE PLATFORMS EFFECTIVE FOR TEACHING & LEARNING
I have used and tried several platforms when looking for where to engage my learners during the lockdown in 2020. But I found out that whatever platform you want to use must be simply learner-focused. If none of them will join your class.
I mean, they must be available, accessible and affordable. I'll talk about this better in another post.
However, these are some of the platforms that I have used in the past. They are very effective:
SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS (SNS)
You can create and organize lessons on:
👉Facebook Group
👉Telegram Group
👉 WhatsApp Group
LEARNING MANAGEMENT SOFTWARES (LMS)
Free to create these apps and share links and/or invitation code with learners.
👉 Edmodo
👉 Teaching
👉 Google Classroom
👉 Microsoft Team's
VIDEO CONFERENCING APPS
If internet access is not a barrier you can also use:
👉Google Meet
👉 Zoom App
👉 Youtube
BASIC TOOLS YOU MAY NEED TO USE
👉CAMERA
👉TRIPOD
👉MICROPHONE
👉HEADSET
👉 INTERNET
You are good if you start with a smartphone, headset and a tripod.
OTHER APPS YOU MAY ALSO NEED TO GET
These would be great for creating your materials and flyers and timetable for your classes.
👉Microsoft Office
👉Canva
👉 Google Docs
👉Google Drive etc.
On a final note:
Are you familiar with (or have you used) any of these apps? Or Did you use another app different or not listed above?
Drop them in the comment sections. Information is power!
