The IELTS Speaking tests last for approximately 13-15 minutes. It is divided into three sections as follows:
Part 1: Introduction
Part 2: Long Turn
Part 3: Interview
These are general top tips for scoring high on the test.
1. Speak out.
You can't speak in your mind or your head when preparing for a speaking test. Speak out! Be aware of yourself and your environment. Talk about yourself: likes and dislikes, your job or study and what you like doing. As regards the environment, be able to speak about your home, hometown, neighbours and neighbourhood. You can talk to someone close to you like your partner about different topics.
2 Be a storyteller.
Imagine stories. These stories might not be 100% true life but they are imaginative and reliable. Look around you. Make stories about what you can see like people, animals and environments. Make stories about where you travelled to that made part of your day. Make stories about what you eat and how you prepare it.
Sometimes, you only need to be a storyteller even if what you are narrating didn't happen to you directly. Use your imagination.
3. Talk about your role at work.
You may be asked to talk about what you do for a living. That's your job. Think about your career and your roles. I mean what you do or how you are helping people at work. Think about what you liked and disliked about the job and also how you qualified for the work you're doing. For instance, you're a nurse. You should think about your roles and what qualification is required to do the job. Sell yourself here.
4. Introduce yourself.
Can you introduce yourself fluently? In summary, talk about what you are and what you do. Practice introducing yourself and answering typical "getting-to-know-you" questions.
5. Talk about your hobby.
Your hobby is what you do in your leisure time. Sometimes, it's something you can do even while you're sick. It's all about what you do in your free time. Express your interests. Choose a hobby or free time interest that you have.
6. Learn.
Learn from books, movies and TV shows. Listen to the radio or podcast. I've talked about this here.
7. Read about the news.
Reading local and international news gives you a vast understanding of social skills and builds your vocabulary abilities. When you read the newspaper or watch the news on TV, think about it in English. How could you explain it to another person in English? How could you explain your own opinions or feelings about particular news events?
8. Build a speaking relationship.
Be bold to talk to everyone you meet. Talk to your suppliers, cashiers, bus drivers, neighbours-everyone!
10. Make notes.
Practice making notes about different topics and turning those into a short speech. Take notes about the following:
food
home
neighbourhood
leisure time
hobbies
job/school
Explain your opinions about these topics. Practice talking about them with examples and details.
